The AI agent that gets buyers to finish, not just browse

You put a get a quote button on your site, or a booking page, or a checkout for an online store. Most of the people who click it never finish. They read the price, hit a question the page never answered, a shipping detail, a scope question, whether the plan covers their specific case, and instead of asking, they close the tab. You never hear the question. You just see a session that did not convert.
Anthropic just put a number on how much that costs. On September 2, 2026, the company released prebuilt blueprints for building AI shopping and merchant agents on Claude, open code a retailer's engineering team can use to get a working agent running in days instead of months. Source Shopify, Visa, Mastercard, and Accenture are the first named partners building on it, and Shopify shipped its own version the same day, wiring a shopping agent straight into a live store.
There are two agents in the blueprint. A shopper agent sits on the storefront and answers questions, remembers what someone told it a few messages back, and hands a finished cart to checkout. A merchant agent sits on the other side, reading a store's own sales and inventory data so the team running it can ask plain questions instead of pulling a report.
Anthropic's head of product for the Claude platform, Angela Jiang, put a number on the shopper agent's effect: customers are about 60% more likely to complete a purchase when an agent is in the loop, and cart size ran 30% to 35% higher for one retail partner. That is one partner's best result, not an audited average across every store running the blueprint, and Anthropic says so itself. Treat it the way you would treat any vendor's own case study, real but favorable.
The moment a buyer almost leaves is the moment an agent earns its keep.
Here is the part that matters if you do not sell on Shopify. The mechanic behind that number has nothing to do with ecommerce specifically. A shopper rarely abandons a cart because the product is wrong. Most of the time one question went unanswered at the exact moment they needed it answered, and asking a human meant waiting, so they left instead. That same moment happens on a service business's pricing page, a quote form, a booking calendar. The visitor reads your price, wonders if it includes something specific, and there is nobody there to ask.
You do not need Shopify's engineering team or a commerce blueprint to close that gap. You need something that reads your own service pages, your own FAQ, your own pricing rules, and can answer the specific question a visitor has right then, on the page, without them leaving to email you and never coming back. That is a narrower, cheaper build than what Anthropic just released. It is one document, a handful of your actual FAQ answers, and an AI chat tool pointed only at that content so it cannot make something up.
Here is the honest math. Figure out how many people land on your quote or pricing page in a month and how many actually submit the form or pick up the phone. If 60 people land on it and 12 convert, that is a 20% close rate on the page itself. You do not need Anthropic's 60% figure to hold exactly for you. You need one real question answered for a handful of the other 48 who left. Even a few extra closes a month, at whatever your average deal is worth, pays for a build like this many times over. The cost side is honest too. Someone still has to write down the real answers to the questions people actually ask, and a chat tool that is not scoped to your own content will happily make up an answer that is wrong and costs you the sale for a different reason.
This is close to the same instinct behind keeping my own path to a real person down to one text message instead of a form buried three clicks deep. The channel is different, a chat box instead of a phone number, but the problem it solves is the same one. Do not make someone wait to ask the one question standing between them and saying yes.
This week, pull up your own quote, pricing, or booking page and write down the three questions you get asked most often after someone reads it, by phone, by email, by text. If those three answers are not sitting in plain text on that page or one click away, that is your gap. You do not need Anthropic's blueprint to close it. You need those three answers, written down, somewhere an AI tool or a human can find them before the visitor gives up and leaves.
